Nosework For Dogs - Doing What Comes Naturally
What is Nosework for Dogs?
Nosework for Dogs is about teaching your dog to find a specific scent or item. It is a free flowing search technique which involves the handler working to support the dog to ensure all area's have been searched.
It is a fully inclusive activity that can be enjoyed by puppies, older dogs, geriatric dogs and dogs that may usually struggle to be around others. The searches can be adapted to suit all abilities so even dogs that have mobility issues can take part. Dogs that may be nervous or reactive can enjoy this activity too and it can help dogs become calmer and more accepting of working in proximity to others. Nosework improves a dogs confidence levels and can help improve their emotional state.
The benefits for dogs taking part in scentwork are many and varied. It is mentally exhausting, a reasonably short search can result in a very tired dog!!! The concentration levels required are great and so dogs do become tired quite quickly. Dogs that do 15-20 minutes of searching will be mentally exhausted, satisfied and happy.
Attending a Nosework for Dogs class or going to a workshop will also increase the bond you have with your dog. It helps build trust and can be a great way of bonding with a new dog or rescue dog. It helps to build up concentration levels in dogs as the searches become longer and more complex. Most importantly of all though, Nosework for Dogs is FUN! Dogs absolutely love it, they are doing what comes naturally to them and being allowed to engage in an activity that some owners find annoying and usually try to stop!
